BAFTA Cymru announced the winners of the 17th Annual BAFTA Cymru Awards on 27 April in Cardiff.

The winners for Best Makeup are:
Doctor Who ‘The Shakespeare Code’
Barbara Southcott & Neill Gorton (Millennium FX).

I loved that episode of Doctor Who and those alien witches were brilliant. But the budgets for Doctor Who and hence the production values so outweigh those of shows produced for the local market — especially Welsh language productions — that it it hardly a level playing field in any of the craft & design categories.

This years’ winners of the Hong Kong Film Awards have now been announced.

The winners for Best Costume & Makeup Design are:
The Warlords / Tau ming chong
Yee Chung-Man, Jessie Dai Mei-Ling & Lee Pik-Kwan.

The Warlords was the night’s big winner, clinching eight out of eighteen possible awards, including Best Film, Best Director for Peter Chan, and Best actor for Jet Li. Lust, Caution, which did not qualify as a Hong Kong film, won the best Asian Film Award.

I loved the modesty of Jet Li’s acceptance speech: ‘If I had not made a lot of kung fu films, I could have won the best actor award 20 years ago.’”

BAFTA Cymru have announced the Nominations Shortlist for their 2008 Awards Ceremony, which will be held at the Wales Millennium Centre on 27 April.

Does anyone have any information on this in-your-shoes TV show currently showing in Denmark. The show, which features radical makeup transformations by Per Kapper, appears to be based on The Big Experiment format which oiginated in New Zealand.

The nominations for the British Academy Television Craft Awards will be announced on 26 March; the awards ceremony will take place on 11 May.

Besides makeup and hair design, the Craft Awards recognise excellence in costume design, editing, graphic design, music, photography and lighting, production design, sound and visual effects.

In addition, there will be a Special Award, to recognise the contribution of a particular individual to Television Craft, and a Break-through Talent Award.

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films have announced the nominees for the 34th Annual Saturn Awards. The awards ceremony will be held on 24 June 2008.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held the 80th Oscars ceremony last night (long after my bedtime).

The winners for Best Makeup were:
La Môme / La Vie en Rose
Didier Lavergne and Jan Archibald.

Great result; as I said in an earlier posting, I was cheering for La Môme — and for Marion Cotillard who inhabited Piaf’s personna. It’s just a shame that the nomination rules did not allow the work of David White and Altered States FX on Marion’s prosthetics to be recognised as well. I’d have voted for the other acting award winners too, and the Best Picture and Best Director winners. I’m glad Juno got something too — and justifiably well done at the Spirit Awards.

Derek Yee Tung-Sing’s Protege (Moon to) leads the way with fifteen nominations, closely followed by Peter Chan Ho-Sun’s The Warlords (Tau ming chong). Ann Hui On-Wah’s The Postmodern Life of my Aunt (Yi ma de hou xian dai sheng huo) has got nine nominations, while Eye in the Sky (Gun chung) and Mad Detective (Sun taam) have both got eight nominations.

Wondering what happened to Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution (Se, jie)? It did not qualify as a Hong Kong film and was only nominated in the Best Asian Film category.
