The Orange British Academy Film Awards Ceremony will be held on 12 February.

I was appalled that the initial nomination for Harry Potter did not include Nick Dudman and The Iron Lady nomination omitted both Mark Coulier & J Roy Helland. The rule book does state that: ‘Eligibility is limited to a maximum of two artists directly responsible for the makeup and hair design in the film.’ But it also adds the proviso that: Exceptionally, where an individual has been responsible for a character or characters which make an outstanding contribution to the overall achievement of the film, they may be considered for nomination alongside those responsible for the overall design of the film.’ Clearly, for these movies BAFTA got it wrong.

This post was revised on 24 January after BAFTA reviewed their nominees for these movies in response to an outcry of protest.

Members of the Academy’s Makeup Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films on 21 January. Following the screenings, members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.

The nominations will be announced on 24 January. The Oscar winners will be announced on 26 February.

Shame he didn’t get to see the release of the complete version of The Devils next March.

Somehow Rest in Peace seems beyond inappropriate for the wild man of British cinema.

PS: I loved Tim Robey’s tribute to Ken Russell in The Daily Telegraph:
‘There was mischief, insult and daring in Russell’s vision, and a playfulness that made him unique – his favourite game was to exploit the starchy norms of British prestige cinema and then abruptly throw an orgy, or blow loud raspberries in the direction of the church. In this sense he followed the rudely provocative tradition of Fellini or Buñuel, but fused that with an antic spirit of thoroughly British eccentricity. His idea of a costume drama was pretty much the antithesis of what Merchant-Ivory said it should be: one where everyone ran around giggling, things exploded and wigs went flying. Only with Mahler’s 5th playing instead of the Benny Hill theme tune.’
