RTS Craft & Design Awards 2008/2009: the winners

Last night the Royal Television Society announced the winners of this year’s Craft & Design Awards.

The nominees in the Makeup Design categories are:

Makeup Design — Drama
Moses Jones
Emma Scott.
‘Portraying in grim detail the gruesome result of a vicious beating, the makeup was so convincing, so livid and so credible that it immediately pulled you as a viewer into the heart of the story and made you curious about the character in question.’

Makeup Design — Entertainment & Non Drama
Dancing On Ice
René Metcalfe & Paul Haskell.
‘ . . . [a] wide variety of exotic creations . . . brought a sense of glamour to the production. The hair styles and make-up for the various artists were exceptional and each told their own story.’

Effects — Special Effects
Being Human
Millennium FX.
‘Working with small budgets and tight deadlines with no post-production enhancement, this work illustrates a real commitment to the profession and the genre. The effective transformations into a werewolf were a tour de force’

Roman Polanski

I have been asked to sign a petition calling for the release of Roman Polanski. I refused.

Roman Polanski is an incredible filmmaker and his life has undoubtedly been touched by tragedy more than once. But he was arrested for sexual assault on a thirteen-year-old girl and later pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with her. One of my daughters will be thirteen in a few weeks; if that happened to her I would not so much want the criminal jailed as beaten to death with a blunt object.

It would have been hypocritical of me to sign the petition.

Wendy van Dijk (Ushi & Dushi)

The following are the two most interesting websites from Dutch makeup artists and FX studios which I’ve found worth bookmarking.

Rob’s Prop Shop: Rob Hillenbrink set up Rob’s Prop Shop in 1986 and has worked on many movies and TV shows, including creating some really neat cosmetic surgery effects for Moordwijven.

Unreal FX: Rogier Samuels and Carola Brockhoff set up Unreal FX in 2001. Amongst other movies and TV shows they have worked on the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and most recently on Zweiohrkueken and Ushi en Dushi.

24th Gemini Awards: the winners

themakeupgallery

Apologies for the recent lack of updates; the main workstation and the network attached storage device both got hit by a power surge and diagnosing the extent of the damage has taken priority. The workstation has now been officially declared dead — or at least not economically viable to repair which amounts to the same thing — and I’ve decided to hold a replacement until Windows 7 is released. The NAS device is also dead but I’m hoping that the 2TB of data is recoverable.

I’ll start working on themakeupgallery again next week but updates are likely to be slower than usual until I get the kit sorted out at the end of this month.

21/10/2009 update: Progress in data recovery has been slower — and far more boring — than anticipated but the new server is now ordered.
