80th Oscars: the winners

Posted in Oscars, makeup awards by themakeupgalleryblogger on February 25th, 2008

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held the 80th Oscars ceremony last night (long after my bedtime).

The winners for Best Makeup were:
La Môme / La Vie en Rose
Didier Lavergne and Jan Archibald.

Great result; as I said in an earlier posting, I was cheering for La Môme and for Marion Cotillard who inhabited Piaf’s personna. It’s just a shame that the nomination rules did not allow the work of David White and Altered States FX on Marion’s prosthetics to be recognised as well. I’d have voted for the other acting award winners too, and the Best Picture and Best Director winners. I’m glad Juno got something too — and justifiably well done at the Spirit Awards.

The full list of winners and nominees is on the Oscars website.

Wondering what happened to Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution (Se, jie)? It did not qualify as a Hong Kong film and was only nominated in the Best Asian Film category.

28th Prix Genie Awards

Posted in makeup awards by themakeupgalleryblogger on February 4th, 2008

Genie AwardOkay, I know that the Genie Awards aren’t announced until 03 March and that there isn’t a category for Best Makeup. However this year the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television / Académie canadienne du cinéma et de la télévision have given a Special Award for Outstanding Achievement in Make-Up Design to MAC.

update 17/02/2008: Apologies, I misread the makeup award page at the Genie Awards website: MAC is the sponsor of the award not the receipient.

The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television / Académie canadienne du cinéma et de la télévision announced on 14 February that they have have given a Special Award for Outstanding Achievement in Make-Up Design to Stephan Dupuis for ‘his exceptional make-up, prosthetic and tattoo work on actor Viggo Mortensen’ in the multi-Genie-nominated Eastern Promises. This is only the fourth such award given by the Academy.

The Prix Genie Awards site has information on nominees in other categories. The winners of the annual Genie Awards will be announced on 03 March.

update 07/03/2008: The full listing of Genie Award Winners is available at the Genie Awards website.
